Assignment One

After reading Scout Bassett: Succeeding in Life one step at a time (on website on desk of page), please write a response to this question.

What obstacles have you had to overcome to become the best person you can be? Be specific. Re-read if needed, my first entry to review how you will be graded. Have fun and remember, don't write anything that you don't want others to read.

I've had to overcome the fact that my fine motor movements are very weak. It is the reason I can't write, print or draw well, and it got in the way of my being as successful as I wanted to be in my younger grades.
I had a lot of physical therapy to help me learn to hold my pencils, and to write better. I still can't write that well, though. Sometimes I still can't read my own writing.
Although it has been difficult, and sometimes embarrassing, I now use things to help me be successful.
For example, I use a dana in classes to help me take notes, and I use a special computer program, called "Dragon" where you speak into a microphone and the computer writes what I am saying. This program sounds like a dream, but it's not a dream for me. Sometimes the computer doesn't understand what I am saying, so it takes me longer to get my work done.
I have learned to live with this obstacle, and I am no longer unhappy about it. I just understand that these are some of the things I need to do to be successful in life.

Stephanie. I loved what you had to say. You have a very good understanding of your strenghts and weaknesses. We all have strengths and weaknesses and knowing strategies to support them makes us successful. I applaud your efforts to overcome your fine motor obstacles. Keep working hard. Success will come your way:)

Some obstacles i had to overcome to become the person i am today were mostly around elementary school from since i was ones year old i met Kalin Killinger and Dale Messick my 2 best friends.growing up in elementary school alot of kids stayed awayed from me probably because i was hyper alot and they called me weird but dale and kalin always were there. some other obstacles i didnt like was my handwriting isnt that good due to the fact im a lefty and whenever i write my hand smudges the paper. however i learned to cope with this and i got better and now if u compare my writing from now to when i was like in the 3rd or 4th or 5th grade its changed greatly. i'm also great at typing it took me a while but in elementary there were a bunch of typing programs i used to help me type and i type very fast now, although in elementary i've had only 2 friends i now have more and i've become more social. one of the biggest obstacles i've had to overcome throughout the years have been: Being more social and trying to not be shy or hide and i could say i have worked on it but i still belive there's more work to be done. I've met new friends from C.E.S. and i still hang out with my friend Neal. I've also found out that one of the kids i new from the previous school before C.E.S. is now here at new caanan high school i see him time to time in the hallways,He's a Senior.

Thinking about my life so far, I had to overcome some obstacles. There is one that really sticks out, when I was in second grade. In second grade, my uncle died of a car crash and it was really hard for my family. I remember that I couldn’t understand why my mom wasn’t home and why she was crying all the time. I definitely remember thinking why this had have to happen to my family. It was a true understanding of life for me, and that everything wasn’t positive. Everything happens for a reason and everything doesn’t go your way.

I have had to overcome making new friends in fourth grade. I moved to New Canaan from Norwalk about five years ago. When I went to visit South School for the first time before the first day of school started, I met this very nice girl Mackenzie. Her and I became good friends and are still best friends till this day and we also made more and more friends as the school years went on. It was hard to make new friends because no one in the school or town knows who you are, you are just known as the new girl in town. So, now that I made many friends I feel very comfortable in New Canaan and many people know who I am.

When I was growing up, I had serious sensory issues that got in the way of me leading a normal life. Certain substances felt so icky to my skin that I could have complete meltdowns if I touched them. I learned to overcome these feelings by realizing that these things would not hurt me.

Dear Mrs. Pivovar,

I think that it was very interesting to learn that reading lips helped you learn how to hear. Do you have a hearing problem today? I think that it would be very interesting to learn how you can learn how to hear from reading lips. Do you think that you can tell us about that someday?

Wow....what wonderful responses. I've learned so much about each of you and that makes me feel connected to you. Thanks for sharing these personal accomplishments. So often we don't talk to each other about obstacles and problems. We just talk about TV shows, movies, sports, or cell phones. We don't really know what a person is like or what they have gone through. Each of you are very brave to share your experience and to connect with each other. Kudos!!!
